2014 Cranksgiving Results & Recap
The fourth-annual Cranksgiving Philadelphia took place on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014. A record-high of 100 riders gathered at Penn Treaty Park for registration and mingling beginning at 11AM, only to be sent off around 12:15PM. The 2014 edition of Cranksgiving Philly sent riders on a 7-stop, 25 mile trek through the aptly-named City of Brotherly Love to benefit Philabundance, the region’s largest hunger-relief organization.
While a good portion of the 100 riders were returning participants from previous editions, many more were new faces and first-timers, which bodes well for future Philly Cranksgivings. Everyone gathered at the finish, Tattooed Mom on South Street, in good time, with full bags and smiling faces. Participants weighed their individual donation on a Philabundance scale with help from our volunteer, Clair, and were then free to enjoy food, drink specials, and other riders’ company. Flax Your Head! Baking had a small bake sale to supplement our cash donation, and Cranksgiving T-shirts (designed by Pixel Parlor, and printed courtesy of Awesome Dudes Printing) were also sold to help the cause.
Awards were given to the following finishers.
- Nick Calcagni – 1st Overall
- Carl DeBeauclair – 2nd Overall
- Jed Gunn – 3rd Overall
- Michelle Ritondo – 1st Female (3rd time Philly Female Champ: 2012, 2013, 2014)
- Alessandro Pruscino – 1st Out of Town (from Central NJ)
- Michael Dailey – Most Charitable (Most Charitable 2011, Most Charitable Runner-Up 2013)
- Tim Chaya & Melanie Flynn – 1st Tandem
Special mention to Sue & David Dannenburg and co., who arrived right before awards to donate ~130 lbs on multiple trailers between a team of 6, but left shortly thereafter.
From the one-hundred riders, plus a few supporters who did not participate in the ride, 1,346 lbs of food were collected. In addition, Whole Foods Market item-matched our riders’ purchases for their two of seven checkpoints, piling on 702 lbs and bringing our total to 2,048 lbs! On the monetary end, we collected about $700 between cash donations, the Flax Your Head! vegan bake sale, and Cranksgiving t-shirt sales. Not only that, but our gracious host sponsor, Tattooed Mom, matched the value of our rider donations (for the 3rd year in a row) by donating an additional $1,500, to bring our monetary donation up and over $2,000! Our biggest and best Cranksgiving Philly collection yet: 2014, on its own, has actually surpassed our accumulated collections from 2011 through 2013!
Hours after all of the riders had trickled out of Tattooed Mom, the organizers, the top two podium winners, and a few helpful friends loaded up a Philabundance van and were able to drop off the donation to the South Philadelphia warehouse that night. Special thanks to our Philabundance liaison, Ed Wong, for sorting many of the collection and transport logistics.
Philabundance began in 1984, only to grow to the largest hunger relief organization in the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region. They were very excited to again be a part of this event, and with Ed’s help, things went very smoothly for the organizers.
Special thanks to all of our Cranksgiving Philadelphia 2014 sponsors: Tattooed Mom (hosting; donation-matching), Whole Foods Market (checkpoints; donation-matching), Pixel Parlor (all print/web design), Awesome Dudes Printing (shirt-screening), Chrome Industries, Oury Grips, Fiks: Reflective, Bicycle Revolutions, Fairmount Bicycles, Fabric Horse, The Bicycle Stable, Alloneword Caps, Reanimator Coffee, Keystone Mini Golf & Arcade, Art In The Age, Spodee Wine, and Narrangansett Brewing (material goods/prizes).
We also thank our volunteers: Jenna, Kat, Clair, and Mike.
And most importantly, thanks to all of our participants, without whom this event would not have happened! Here’s to a bigger and better Cranksgiving Philly, 2015.
