The third-annual Cranksgiving Philadelphia took place on Sunday, November 24th, 2013. Forty-eight registered riders braved less-than-ideal weather: overcast skies, temperatures hovering in the 20-degree range (with a high of 32F), and 20+ mile an hour winds. 2012’s event saw 50-degree weather bring out 63 participants, so hopefully 2014 will be more cooperative! Riders began showing up at Penn Treaty Park, located along the Delaware River, around 11 AM, and didn’t stop coming until manifests were given out around 12:15PM. Many of the participants were returning riders from the 2011 and 2012 editions, along with unexpected friends, a few out-of-state cyclists, one of our sponsors, and fast locals. It was nice to see so many ready and excited to ride for a good cause, but that may have been because they couldn’t wait to warm back up! The manifests included a rough map and instructed the riders to travel to six different grocery stores throughout the city, picking up one Thanksgiving food item at each “checkpoint”. A few grocery store changes and self-timestamps on the manifest for each stop kept everyone honest and on their toes for a fun and safe ride. After the six stops, participants finished at Tattooed Mom on South Street to hand in their manifests, and have their load weighed by our Philabundance representative, Ed Wong. Ed also graciously took care of some logistical issues that have caused us headaches in years past, by offering to load up all of our food donations in his car to take directly to work at Philabundance the next day! Riders relaxed and shared stories over food and drink specials while waiting for others to finish. Flax Your Head! Baking also provided vegan chocolate chip cookies for free/donation, with 100% of the money going straight to Philabundance. The 2013 route came in between 20-25 miles, depending on the order of stops chosen.
Awards were given to the following finishers.
- Carl DeBeauclair – 1st Overall
- Antonio – 2nd Overall
- Steve Johnson – 3rd Overall
- Michelle Ritondo – 1st Female
- Ivan Duka – 1st Out of Town (came from NYC!)

From the forty-eight participants (plus a few latecomers), 646 lbs of food was collected to benefit Philabundance. In addition, our gracious sponsor Tattooed Mom matched the monetary value of our donations with a $700 check, and with a handful of other donations, brought our total to 646 lbs and close to $1,000.

The second-annual Cranksgiving Philadelphia took place on Sunday, November 18th, 2012. With temperatures in the 50s and overcast skies, but with no chance of precipitation, it was a perfect day to to ride for the needy. Sixty-three riders came out for this great event, which was many more compared to the thirteen participants who attended the inaugural event last year! Riders began showing up at Penn Treaty Park, located along the Delaware River, around 11 AM, and didn’t stop coming until manifests were given out right at 12 PM. Unexpected friends, a local bicycle club en masse, older suburban cyclists, two of the actual sponsors, and handfuls of out-of-towners coupled with the fast locals would ensure that it would be a fun and interesting race. The manifests included a rough map, and instructed the riders to travel to six different grocery stores throughout the city, picking up one Thanksgiving food item at each “checkpoint”. Only five stops were given up front, with the sixth “mystery stop” being revealed half-way through the race, so as to keep everyone on their toes. After the six stops, participants raced to Tattooed Mom on South Street for the finish and afterparty. Riders then relaxed and shared stories over Sunday brunch and drink specials while waiting for others to finish. The route came in around 20 mi at the shortest, to 23 mi at the longest.
Awards were given to the following finishers.
- Michelle Ritondo – 1st Overall and 1st Female
- Brendan Graham – 2nd Overall
- Steph Irwin – 3rd Overall, 2nd Female
- Matthew Budd – 10th Overall, 1st Out of Town (came from Brooklyn after doing Cranksgiving NYC the day before!)

- Fiks: Reflective – Best Out-of-Town Crew (not only sponsored, but packed into a van and drove across the state to participate!)
From the sixty-three participants, 798 lbs of food was collected to benefit Philabundance. In addition, our gracious sponsor Tattooed Mom matched the monetary value of our donations with a $1,000 check, and with a handful of other donations, brought our total to 798 lbs and $1,200. A huge increase from our 200 lb donation from last year’s Cranksgiving, this year will help many more families enjoy a decent Thanksgiving meal.
